IKKI HINO

Taikoshu Ikki's profile

Mr. Ikki Hino organized his group with 2 other members in July 2002. His goal as the group's leader is to create a sound which will grab your soul and awaken something deep within your soul and shake your soul. (Creating a beautiful, comfortable sound is not the objective.)

The group's first performance in a foreign country occurred in July 2004 when they were invited to Taiwan as a part of 50 year anniversary of Taiwan Tourism. Five groups from four countries were invited, and Ikki group was the representative of Japan. The five groups performed throughout Taiwan, and Ikki group won the highest praise.

In September 2004, Ikki group gave their first independent performance. Even though a typhoon was attacking on the same day as the concert, the concert was a great success with good attendance.

In November 2004, they were invited to Ukraine where they played as the first Japanese players in Ukraine. Durign the month and a half duration of their stay, a total attendance of 15,000 people enjoyed their playing. Even though their visit was at the time of the presidential election, their performances received a great deal of television and newspaper coverage and the people of the Ukraine were very exited by Ikki group's playing.

Immediately after returning home from the Ukrainian tour, Ikki group was invited to perform at the Korean Drum Festival. Nine groups from five countries were invited. Ikki group's unique style, and strong, soulfilled sound overpowered the other groups and Ikki's playing won the highest praise.

In 2005, Ikki group played in many events including the Narita Drum Festival. Also, Mr. Hino, the leader, performed as a soloist in a joint concert with the world renowned Forsythe Contemporary Dance Group.

In September Ikki group had their 2nd concert in Osaka. In December Ikki group were again invited to the Korean Drum Festival and again received high praise for their performance.

IKKI HINO was born in Osaka, 1977.
Influenced by his father Akira Hino, a legendary free-Jazz drummer, he has been played with drum sticks since his childhood.
He showed his remarkable musical ability in his high school as a leader of the marching band, and later as a Japanese Taiko drummer after joining the JGSDF.
Since then, he has served as a principal Taiko drummer, composer, organizer, and music director.

In 2002, IKKI formed a Taiko drumming ensemble "Taiko-Shu IKKI" with three people and has performed extentively in Japan.
The group visited Taiwan for the music festivals as a Cultural ambassador in 2004, and toured around the country.
Soon after they become the first Japanese domestic Taiko groups to be invited to national tour in Ukraine, where they performed for President of Ukraine and the nation's greats. Their one-month-and-a-half touring, which was broadcasted on TV and othermedia, created a big sensation in Ukrania.

As a solo Taiko drummer/musical director, IKKI has collaborated with such great artists and companies as DJ SHIRO AMAMIYA, the SIS Company (Japanese leading theatrical company), and dancers in The Forsythe company, the world-renowned dance company of contemporary dance/ballet.
This time, he challenges himself to be the first Japanese to have street lives in Eastern Europe to communicate with a lot more people directly through a real Japanese Taiko sound of soul, which could touch hearts beyond people and nations.
